Bush Administration to Lift North Korea Sanctions

BREAKING NEWS: Pyongyang hands over accounting of its nuclear work, paving way for it to be removed from the U.S. terrorism blacklist and have some trade sanctions removed

WASHINGTON — Pledging "action for action," President Bush on Thursday said North Korea has demonstrated a commitment to dismantling its nuclear weapons program and will be rewarded by being removed from the U.S. list of state sponsors and having trade sanctions lifted.

The president spoke hours after North Korea submitted its long-awaited declaration detailing its nuclear weapons activities. The government said that it would televise the demolition of the cooling tower at its Yongbyon nuclear facility and turned over documents to China about its plutonium core and waste activities.

"Today is a positive day and it's a positive step forward," Bush said from the White House Rose Garden. "My point is this: We'll see. They said they are going to destroy parts of their plant in Pyongyang. That's a very positive step."

But Bush added, "We will trust you only to the extent that you fulfill your promises. I'm pleased with the progress ... there are no illusions ... this is the first step."

Bush said that in response to North Korea, the U.S. would erase trade sanctions under the Trading With the Enemy Act and notify Congress that in 45 days it intends to take North Korea off the State Department list of nations that sponsor terrorism. READ MORE

Is this good news? Or is North Korea just playing another game of cat and mouse?

It seemed that for a short time there that the US and North Korea were on the brink of hostel actions. Was the Bush policy of dealing with North Korea a success? Or would we have been better off with military action against them?

Re: Bush Administration to Lift North Korea Sanctions

This is good news.

Clearly a victory for the Bush Administration.

I can't imagine how military intervention would have been beneficial.

I'm still sketchy on whether N. Korea is selling nuclear information to Syria or other potentially hostile Middle Eastern countries. But this is a step in the right direction.

Re: Bush Administration to Lift North Korea Sanctions

I agree that this is a step in the right direction, but this won't look to good for others. People who agree with the Iraq war may see this as "backing down" from a potential threat. Others who oppose the war will see this as pure hypocrisy. Why lift sanctions on one country, but invade a country who only rumored to have WMDs.

Korea has nukes and displays them.

Re: Bush Administration to Lift North Korea Sanctions

I think this is NOT a good idea. Of course I would having been in the Military. I think it is very hypocritical. Then again there are many Countries that also harbor and manufacture nuclear weapons etc and are also known to be anti-american to which we do business with....I just don't understand. I don't think we can trust them. Back in the early 80's there was a lot of crap going on with Saddam Hussein and Iraq/Iran etc....way back then the Government knew something was going on. They bombed the barracks in Beirut killing almost 300 Marines while they slept in their Barracks, one of them my Fiance....I had to wonder after 9/11 why something wasn't done sooner....make no mistake This Governement was well aware of the threat for many many years....

Bush: "Kay, N Korea, you're off the axis of evil! Congrats!"
