It expresses an emotion, not a desire. Like, "If he's not here with the beer before kickoff, I'll kick his ass." Well, no, you won't really kick his ass. You'll just be pissed. Or, "If she keeps flirting with that surfer dude, I may have to bitchslap her in front of this whole bar." C'mon, nobody's getting bitchslapped. There's just going to be a scene. Emotion....not desire. Punching babies says what it has to say. It expresses an emotion, not a desire.
